Naomi Shongo- 17399443 The Evolution Of The InternetThe internet is also referred to as ‘the net’. The internet is a worldwide system of computer networks. It is a network of networks in which users using any computer can get information from another computer. The internet was first known as the ARPAnet and it was first conceived in 1969 by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S government. The aim of creating the internet was to enable users of a research computer at one university to talk to users at other universities (Rouse, 2019). 1967–1972: The ARPANET1983–1995: Research network to ‘civilian’Until the end of the 1970s the internet was restricted for those who worked in relatively small number of institutions who had contracts from ARPA. The National Science Foundation funded the creation of Computer Science Network (CSNET) in the early 1980s. By 28th February 1990 the ARAPNET was decommissioned. In 1982 the word ‘internet’ was born (Naughton, 2016). 1995–2000: The first Internet boom2000-2003: Web 2.02000-present: Mobile connectivityThe arrival of the ‘smartphone’ can be considered the most significant moment in the evolution of the internet. Apple launched their first iPhone in 2007. The adoption of smartphones has increased rapidly, and few millions of internet users will use their smartphones to access the internet. Internet and businessOne way that the evolution of the internet has changed business is the fact that smartphones are starting to replace desktops. The internet has enabled businesses to do e-commerce and for many consumers their mobile phones have become the main source of information search and engagement. Businesses that use mobile phone to target their consumers are looking to become ‘mobile only’ (Estrin, 2017). The evolution of the internet has paved the way for globalisation. The internet has reduced the cost of operating globally. Businesses can get their business out on a global scale and it allows them to reach a wider audience. The benefit of this is that the internet will increase sales. With the rise of social media, the marketing cost can be reduced. Businesses can use social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc to advertise to their target audience. These businesses can use social media to get their products and services in front of their target audience at a lower cost than when advertising on television etc. Businesses can share information and knowledge easily and quickly. The internet has made sharing resources easy and efficient. Businesses can do task such as book keeping and customer care online. Social media platforms can also be used as a means of customer care. Some businesses respond to their customers enquiries on their social media platforms making it easy and quick for both customers and businesses (Durden, 2019 Harvard ReferenceDurden, O. (2019). Digital CommunicationDigital communication has changed dramatically though the use of technology, from the first cell phone to the internet. 3G digital communication through mobile phones began in 2001, this provided effective communication through text, voice calls and internet access. Email changed how businesses communicate digitally and to this day is one of the most effective methods of communication. In 2019, digital communication has grown dramatically with a wide range of methods used to communicate from; Bluetooth devices, GPS devices(Google Maps), credit/debit cards, keyless devices and cash registers. (Sarokin, 2019) Community portals online allow users to share and access information, a community based on similar interest provides users an open platform to discuss topics and interactions. Social networking sites can be used for professional or persona purposes, digital communities can be created and shared through social networking and can receive engagement. (O'Murchu, I, et al.,2004) An online digital communication platform founded in May 2003, that provides professional qualified users to create an account and connect with LinkedIn members looking for jobs etc. LinkedIn provides opportunities for potential digital communication through instant messaging and online sharing/commenting. (O'Murchu, I, et al.,2004) google+Social media marketing tool powered through Google, used as a digital communication network to share images, information and self-promotion. Google+ is known as anInformation Network, used to connect with users with similar interest.
